Here is Manoj Kumar, a farmer from the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh describing his successes with Natural Farming. Manoj grew crops using agro-chemicals for over 2 decades. However, long term issues of soil, animal, human and plant health led him to start experimenting with Natural farming for the last 2 years. With assistance from the Government of Himachal Pradesh - Natural Farming Division, Manoj was able to enhance his Agrobiodiversity and move to highly nutritious crops like pseudo-cereals and millets. With Sustainable Crop Intensification techniques in Agriculture and Horticulture, Manoj was able to change his soil structure, and reduce input costs and reliance on expensive agro-chemicals. With a suitable package of practices, Manoj was able to see results in his crops more quickly than his neighboring farmers who continued using chemicals. Interestingly, even at a high altitude of 2200m (8800 ft) above sea level he is able to grow hardy crops like Foxtail and Finger Millet and non-irrigated Folk Rice Varieties (FRVs). This has yielded good net income to him and also proven that Natural Farming is truly sustainable, if done with the right mindset and practices. As of August 2020, Natural Farming as implemented by the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) of Government of Himachal Pradesh has over 77000 farmers covered under a unique scheme called "Prakritik Kheti Khushaal Kisaan Yojana" (PK3Y - Natural Farming - Prosperous Farmer Scheme). The government has ambitious plans to reach over 900000 farmers of the state and convert all of the farming to Chemical Free Natural Farming. It invites all people - producers, consumers, tourists, entrepreneurs - to participate in this unique intiative. The mission of SPIU is to achieve a Full Natural Farming status for the entire state of Himachal Pradesh and its activities are inline with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) too. Farmer like Manoj Kumar are testament to the fact that Chemical-Free agriculture is not only possible but also has the potential to become the default agriculture system of Himachal Pradesh.
